Open Enrollment for ACA marketplace plans is one of the most important windows of the year. Whether you’re renewing coverage or enrolling for the first time, understanding the 2026 changes can save you hundreds of dollars per month.
Key dates for 2026
- November 1, 2026 — Open Enrollment begins
- December 15, 2026 — Deadline for coverage starting January 1, 2027
- January 15, 2027 — Final deadline (coverage starts February 1, 2027)
If you miss the window, you’ll generally need a Qualifying Life Event (marriage, job loss, birth of a child) to enroll outside this period.
What changed in 2026
1. Enhanced subsidies extended
The expanded premium tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act have been extended through 2027. Households earning up to 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) continue to qualify for subsidies, and many pay $0/month for Silver-tier coverage.
2. More insurers, more choice
Most states saw 2–3 new carriers enter the marketplace. More competition generally means better networks and lower premiums — but it also means more plans to compare.
3. Tighter network transparency
Carriers must now publish provider directories in real time. If you have a preferred doctor, you can verify network inclusion before enrolling — not after.
How to prepare
- Gather documents: Social Security numbers, most recent tax return, current pay stubs, and immigration documents if applicable.
- Estimate your 2027 income: Your subsidy is based on projected income, not last year’s. Include all household members who will file jointly.
- List must-have providers: Your doctor, your spouse’s specialist, your kids’ pediatrician. Match plans to networks, not the other way around.
- Review prescriptions: Each plan has a formulary. Check that your regular medications are covered at the tier you can afford.
